Help Us Shape the Future.
Clean, Efficient, and Sustainable.

Paper Is in Our DNA.
Sustainability Is in Our Heart.
Koehler Renewable Energy is part of the Koehler Group, a family company with around 2,500 employees worldwide and a history stretching back over 215 years. A passion for specialty paper—an energy-intensive industry—is embedded deep in Koehler’s DNA.
That’s why the Koehler Group has been investing in its own sustainable energy supply for 20 years now. This area of business became an independent unit in 2012 with the founding of Koehler Renewable Energy.
Our work at Koehler Renewable Energy not only contributes significantly to the Koehler Group’s sustainability strategy, but is also helping to safeguard energy security on our planet in the long term.

Solid Values for a
Solid Company
Sustainability
For us, sustainability means assuming full responsibility as a Group: We bring the environment, the economy, and social well-being together under one umbrella in order to conserve our current resources for future generations too.
Family-Run
For us, investments that make sense in the long term are what counts, rather than making short-term gains. We have a trusting working relationship with our customers, suppliers, and employees.
Future-Oriented
We always have one eye on the future. That’s why our main focus is on product innovations that are successful and regenerative in the long run. On a sustainable energy supply that sets standards. And on a career development that creates long-term prospects.
From Planning to Commercialization:
We’re a One-Stop Shop
Securing the land and site
We use site surveys to identify the optimal location for renewable energy plants. This is followed by a calculation of the required capacity, the selection of the right system type, environmental reviews, and permitting.
Project planning
Project development
We procure all the materials needed in order to build the corresponding renewable energy plant, with examples including generators, turbines, and cables. This step requires contracts with the pertinent suppliers and contractors.
Financing
We use cost budgets, risk analyses, and project controlling and look for investors in order to ensure a smooth financing process.
Implementation
Construction phase
The site is prepared, foundations are laid, installation structures are erected, and plant components are installed. After all the required systems are integrated, the plant is connected to the grid.
Energy management
We ensure reliable and competitive energy delivery. To ensure this, we plan, organize, and implement sustainable and cost-effective energy procurement and sales strategies for all our sites.

Biomass
Biomass
Biomass is full of valuable energy. With this method of energy production, waste timber and plant waste are burned and converted into electric power or steam. This is also the case at Koehler Renewable Energy combined heat and power plants – at our Kehl site, to be precise. Electric power and steam are used directly for our paper machines there. Our numerous other sites in Germany supply sustainable energy to external industry partners and the public grid.
Wind power
Wind power
People have been harnessing the power of wind for centuries. It’s a natural resource, and one that makes it possible to generate carbon-neutral energy to boot – an important component in Koehler Renewable Energy’s energy mix. With two wind farms, Koehler Renewable Energy currently produces enough energy to cover the needs of up to 21,000 households with clean energy. Two more wind farms are in the planning and construction pipeline too. Ultimately, wind is and will remain what it has always been for humanity: constant, reliable, and infinitely powerful.
Hydroelectric power
Hydroelectric power
Hydroelectric power is the type of energy generation that is most closely intertwined with the paper industry. After coal and gas, it’s the third most widely used form of electricity generation in the world. Koehler Renewable Energy’s six plants are located in Scotland and have a total output of 3.6 MW.
Photovoltaics
Photovoltaics
Life on Earth would not be possible without it—the Sun is the energy source for plants, animals, and humans and we have used it for our own purposes from time immemorial. Solar power, which is used to convert sunlight into electric energy with photovoltaic cells, is an environmentally friendly and cost-effective method of power generation, as well as one of the main pillars of our energy transition. We design, build, and manage open-site plants and also offer our extensive expertise to industrial customers as an external service provider.
The Koehler Promise
„We have set ourselves the goal of generating more energy from renewable sources with our own plants than we need for our paper production by 2030.“
